Think Like a Thief
What could be scarier than waking up in the middle of the night to someone BURGLARIZING your home?
Or returning from vacation to find your home BROKEN INTO?
There are several things you can do that will make it less likely for a burglar to pick your home.
A little bit of preparation may go a long way and here are some tips to get you started.
Wondering how Canada performs when it comes to Burglaries?
Have a look at what the Conference Board of Canada has to say.
Watch this video now, to Think Like a Thief.
Security yard signs, stickers, and visible cameras discourage burglars and they may opt for an easier target in the neighborhood.
Posting a ‘Beware of Dog’ sign scares off thieves and you don’t even need to own a dog.
There are also visual cues like an overflowing mailbox or untrimmed lawn that may suggest that nobody has been home in some time and it’s safe to break in. Get a neighbor to shovel your driveway, if you are going away during the winter.
Although creating privacy with high fences, walls, trees, shrubs, and hedges may make you feel more relaxed, keep in mind that it also gives burglars the opportunity to ply their trade unobserved.
Of course you want everyone to know that you are going on vacation and post pictures of your travels.
Nowadays, a lot of burglars are quite social media savvy and may be watching for people who will be away.
You might just be putting a giant target on your home because finding out your address is a lot easier than you might think.
Post your travel pictures once you have returned home and take yourself off the target list.
Often times burglaries are not entirely pre-planned and leaving out home equipment like ladders may be aiding thieves to access open windows or attic entrances on a whim.
Keep your windows and doors locked and equipment put away, to ensure there is no easy access point into your home.
As you saw in the video, one of the first targets inside the home is the master bedroom.
If you own jewelry and other valuables, don’t store them all together in the top of your dresser.
Make sure you put them in a plain storage container, such as a shoe box, and place them somewhere unusual like a kid’s bedroom.
The longer a thief has to spend time searching for valuables, the more likely they will give up and move on.
That’s something many people may not even have considered, as we are constantly running around looking for chargers and cords to plug our equipment in.
Especially if you are going to be away for a while, store your electronics and chargers separately and possibly even distributed throughout the house.
Put away video games, as they can easily be sold once stolen.
